I've omitted the limas and substituted a can of pintos - turned out great. I too omit the white sugar but I add about 2 tablespoons of molasses. I must say, these beans are fantastic - we all love them and have eaten them as meal themselves. They do freeze well.

I haven't tried this recipe without the lima beans or with a substitute for them. I think it could work with either doubling up one of the other beans that are already in the recipe or with either pinto beans or great northern beans. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

We haven't tried freezing this and reheating it. It might work. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

I have made these beans and they are excellent. But do yourself a favor and leave out the white sugar. Do the brown sugar and even skimp on that a little. Maybe take back a teaspoon from the 1/4 cup. The beans just need a hint of sweetness. Trust me.
