Cris here. We just love apple season. We are still working through all the yummy apples we got at our last trip to the orchard. One of things we often get asked is how to use fresh apples in some of our recipes that call for apple pie filling. So, I thought I would share how we make apple pie filling out of fresh apples at our house. That way if it is apple season, you can choose to use fresh apples.
Homemade Apple Pie Filling {Crock Pot}
- This recipe makes 5 cups of filling which is plenty to fill a 9 inch pie or delicious served over ice cream or biscuits. We also like serving it with pie crust cookies. We just get rolls of refrigerated pie dough, unroll them and then use fun cookie cutters to spell out messages or make our favorite shapes.
- We recommend that you use a 6 quart slow cooker. The apples will fill up your slow cooker and then cook down.
- We used Jonagold apples but you can use your favorite all purpose apple.

Can I use something else in place if the almond extract, or is it necessary? I don’t care for almond. Can vanilla be used?
Vanilla will work just fine. Enjoy!
How long is the processing time if you can them? and what size jars?
Thanks for sharing all these recipes and answers to questions.
Can this be frozen after cooking? Would love to have some when apple season is over.
This sounds great … how would you keep it for future use?
Can you freeze this if you don’t use it right away? We love apple pies and having filling on hand would be great. Thank you!
I think it should freeze up just fine. I would just cut my apples thicker so that they don’t break down after freezing. Enjoy!
Can you make this in batches and then freeze for future use in a pie?
You should be able to freeze it, however if you are planning on freezing them, I would cut my apples thick and not thin so they will stand up to the cooking and freezing process. Hope that helps!
You could also can them in a hot water bath. That’s what I do.
