In the bottom of a lightly greased 6-quart crock pot, layer half your ham, half your tots and half your cheese, in that order (if using a casserole crock, place all your ham, all your tots and all your cheese, in that order and ignore the next step ;) )
Repeat your layers
Place your sliced butter evenly around the top
Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or high for 2-2.5 hours
