Put your butter, milk and sugar in a large saucepan and heat over medium heat until it comes to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Once your mixture comes to a boil, stir continually until it thickens. Remember that it will thicken more as it cools.
Remove from heat and stir in coconut, if desired, and vanilla until well combined.
Let it cool for at least 10-15 minutes before pouring or spooning on your cooled cake and spread out evenly.
Sprinkle your chopped pecans on top of the icing.
