How to Make Crock Pot Cowboy BBQ Beans

Youtube video

Cris here.

When I first saw this recipe in Gooseberry Patch’s  Slow-Cooker Recipes Cookbook it immediately reminded me of an old family recipe for beans that we would keep cRockin’ all day long when we had company. They guys always went out hunting and the gals all went shopping and EVERYONE looked forward to coming home to these beans!

So needless to say I was eager to see if this recipe could hold up to my childhood memories of those tangy sweet beans and beef.

I was not disappointed one bit!

And neither was Puddie ๐Ÿ˜‰

We loved these beans and they couldn’t be easier to make.

Now this recipe calls for browning your beef ahead of time.  This can be a bit of a pain unless you cook up your ground beef ahead of time and freeze it for such a time as this ๐Ÿ˜‰

Another option is to invest in multi-cooker to brown your ground beef in the same pot, so you can keep those “extra step” cRockin’ recipes one-pot meals.

I went ahead and doubled the beef up in this recipe (my alterations are included in the card below) because my family will eat this as a side and a main dish. Heck, I do believe my family would eat this for dessert if I let them!

  1. I used butter bean, ti replace the kidney beans

  2. Would like to know if another type of bean can be used in place of lima beans.

I haven’t tried this recipe without the lima beans or with a substitute for them. I think it could work with either doubling up one of the other beans that are already in the recipe or with either pinto beans or great northern beans. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

I’ve omitted the limas and substituted a can of pintos – turned out great. I too omit the white sugar but I add about 2 tablespoons of molasses. I must say, these beans are fantastic – we all love them and have eaten them as meal themselves. They do freeze well.

  3. Can you freeze the cowboy bbq pork and beans

We haven’t tried freezing this and reheating it. It might work. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

I have made these beans and they are excellent. But do yourself a favor and leave out the white sugar. Do the brown sugar and even skimp on that a little. Maybe take back a teaspoon from the 1/4 cup. The beans just need a hint of sweetness. Trust me.

They are delicious! I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Loved this recipe. I added a little extra beef and a little extra bbq sauce. I reduced the sugar to less than a quarter cup of sugar and brown sugar combined, as I am not sugar tolerant and my hubby is a diabetic. Everyone at our daughter’s graduation party loved them. Will certainly make them again.

These are a lot like a recipe that my first MIL gave to me that I have since lost and can not get back since she has past on. We make a meal out of these and will use some for sides since it make enough for the two of us to have extras.
