This past Christmas season. I made up several hams to test different recipes and I was very eager to freeze my ham bones for recipes just like this one!
I purposefully left a lot of meat on one of those ham bones for this very recipe. I had seen a recipe in Gooseberry Patch’s Busy Day Slow Cooker for Crock Pot Black Eyed Peas and Ham Hock and I knew I wanted to adapt it for our personal tastes. The original recipe called for spicy flavors of diced tomatoes and for celery. I knew we would much prefer Italian tomatoes (basil, oregano and garlic), a bit more garlic and sweet bell peppers instead of celery. The results were fantastic. Mikey was blown away. He wants us to film a video ASAP! Lol!

Can you add Okra to this recipe?
Cris says
Hi Denise-
I don’t cook a lot with okra but my guess is you would want to add it towards the end. If I remember correctly, okra can get mushy if it overcooks. Hope that helps!

Amazing! I did not pre soaked the black eye peas and I used Rótel with green Chile’s instead and added a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little spice. Also, I used chicken broth instead because that is what I had in the pan tree. It came out amazing!

I was wondering if I could leave out the tomatoes because my stomach can’t take the acid that is in them. Thank you for your time, Happy New Year and I hope that I will hear from you sometime after the New Year starts.
Cris says
Hi Michelle-
You can definitely leave them out, you will just want to add more liquid to keep your black eyed peas from drying out during cooking. Hope that helps!

This recipe looks delicious! I would like to substitute celery – how much of that could be used to replace the green pepper? Thanks!
Cris says
Hi Shirley!
The original recipe just called for 1 rib, but I would add 2 or 3. Enjoy!
