Cris here. Confession time… for as LONG as I can remember, Mikey has always hated cubed steak. So, of course, I had to set out to fix that ;). And, sure enough… we finally came up with just the right recipe and he loved it so much he made a video about it!
So what is different? Well we just adapted a beloved tried and true recipe and made it with cubed steak! This recipe makes the BEST Homestyle Chicken and Pork Chops… so, I thought why not try cubed steak?! It turned out beautifully! AND, Mikey actually enjoyed cubed steak!
Crock Pot Cubed Steak with Gravy Recipe Notes
- Since there is a browning step, we like using our browning slow cookers (like this one) to brown our steak in the slow cooker before slow cooking but you can use any 6 quart slow cooker and just do the browning step in a skillet if you’d like.
- I used a large gallon sized baggie to coat all of my cubed steak. Just pour all of your coating ingredients in and smoosh (technical term ???? ) things around until everything is coated.
- After coating there will be a little extra flour in the the bag. Save the extra flour mixture as you will need it for your sauce.
Crock Pot Cubed Steak with Gravy
Ingredients
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1½ teaspoon dry mustard
- ½ teaspoon teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- 7 pieces cubed steak
- 2 Tablespoon oil
- 2 cups beef broth
Instructions
- Mix together your flour, dry mustard, salt, pepper and garlic powder and coat your beef (I use a gallon size baggie).
- Reserve excess flour mixture for later step.
- Heat oil in a skillet (or browning slow cooker)
- Brown your cubed steak on all sides but do not cook through.
- Mix together any excess flour with broth and pour into slow cooker.
- Add steak and cook on high for 90 min to 2½ hours until steaks are fork tender and sauce has thickened.

This recipe is so good and very simple to make. My family enjoys it. The taste and texture takes me back to my childhood when my grandmother made cube steak on the stove top.

This is one of my favorite recipes. It doesn’t take very many ingredients and it is very easy to make. I like to cut a yellow onion in half, then thinly slice and add to the crock pot. I also like to add a jar of sliced mushrooms. It is soooo delicious! This recipe is a keeper for sure!
Aunt Lou says
I’m so glad you enjoy this recipe! Love the ways you make it your own. They sound delicious!

How many pounds is 7 pieces of meat! Recipe sounds delish!
Aunt Lou says
It will vary depending on what is available at the store. Enjoy!

I have to admit I have not cooked in a while as my husband took over that job. We had to take dinner to some good friends after her surgery and my husband was not going to be here to cook. I made this recipe along with some garlics mashed potatoes, green beans and deviled eggs and homemade biscuits. I made extra for us, this steak and gravy was delicious! Thank you and I will be making this again!
Aunt Lou says
I am so glad to hear that Sandy! I hope your friend is recovering quickly and enjoyed the meal you so thoughtfully brought her!

Hi Cris, I have not tried this yet, but can’t wait. I do have a question, even though someone else has asked but did not get a response. Can I cook this on low? And if so, For how long? Thanks for any help you can give me. Have a wonderful and blessed day. 🙂
Cris says
Hi Joann-
I haven’t tried it on low, but if I were testing it I would do it on low for 4-5 hours and check it for tenderness. Then I would cook longer if not quite tender. If you try it, let me know how it goes.

I had to come back and rate this DELICIOUS recipe with 5 stars!! My favorite (alongside the Mississippi Beef Roast)!!
Kim L Honeycutt says

Meant to give it 5 stars (deserves higher)!!

I’m glad I was able to finally find a recipe that doesn’t use a gravy or onion soup packet. They almost always have msg in them and tend to give me migraines.
Mary Lotempio says
Chris I love cube steaks, will be giving this recipe a try very soon!
Kathi says
Hi there – I made this yesterday. OMG – was it ever good and sooooooooooo tender. I only made one change – I am highly allergic to MSG – so I used Better than Bouillon Beef Base and of course served it over red mashed potatoes. I also cut the steak portion down to 2 – 3 pieces cause there is only me and this will make a great left-over for another meal. Thanks again for a terrific recipe.

I love this recipe in the crockpot and I’m sure I will love this one too. Is there anywhere that I can get nutritional information on your recipes? My husband suddenly has to go on a low-sodium diet and we are truly scrambling. Thank you
Lidia Anderson says
so sorry – this is supposed to be for Mississippi Roast in the electric pressure cooker.

Hi I have always loved all of your recipes, but I have just recently found of a new world of cooking using an Instant Pot. I wish you could convert your recipes to do both kinds of cookings.

I totally love our crock pot but we don’t use it enough. Its down our cellar because there isn’t enough room to store it in our kitchen, so I have to carry it up the stairs. When I saw this recipe, I knew I had to make it. The problem is there is only 2 of us now as my dad just died 3 weeks ago. He was on a feeding tube anyway so he couldn’t have eaten any of this. I watched the video to see how much the cube steaks equaled since we were going to a store in our town that’s been in business since the 60’s which is when I remember first going and we wanted to half the cube steaks in the recipe. They don’t sell meat in prepackaged, so we needed to know how many to get. I loved the video! Your hubby is a riot and you’re not so bad yourself. I bought 1lb. instead of 2 but made the rest the same for supper tomorrow night. The smell in the kitchen was amazing! We broke off a piece of the cube steak to taste it when it was done and oh my gosh, it was amazing! Just in case there isn’t enough gravy for us we might make more but this recipe is a keeper! Love your blog, love your recipes and loved your video. Your husband reminds me of Larry The Cable Guy, which is why I think I love him. Thanks for a really great recipe!
Gail Plaskiewicz says
We ate it last night. As I was dishing it out, and I could smell it as it was warming up, I was drooling. I made more gravy and we also put it on the mashed ‘taters. When mine was in my plate, I needed a napkin for all the drool! Oh my gosh, it tasted so good! We had peas with it and I have to say this recipe is a keeper. I told a friend of mine that I made this recipe and she told me to send it to her because she never makes cube steaks that are moist and juicy. I told her she would love this recipe. My sister is going to eat some tomorrow night. I know she will love it.
Cris says
Hi Gail- So glad you enjoyed it (and the video)!
Cris says
Hi Crystal-
We totally realize that our style of video is not everyone’s cup of tea, that is why we put all the information to make the recipe in the blog post so no one is forced to watch the video to get the recipe. We are also doing some short form videos, however this post just happens to be on one of the long form days– a form a video that many of our readers enjoy. In the future, feel free to skip these if you personally don’t enjoy them and know that you aren’t missing out on any vital recipe information. Enjoy!

Hello Cris,
I’m not writing to comment on your videos which I think are just fine, I am writing to comment on you recipe for Crock Pot Cubed Steak with Gravy, which in MY case was actually for Crock Pot CHICKEN Cubed Steak with Gravy. Your recipe was the best one that came up when I did a Google search for one and I am glad I chose it.
I had four (4) chicken cube steaks that were really nice and I love my Ninja multi-cooker, so after using the large zip-lock bags to coat all the meat, browning them was easy. I followed the recipe almost exactly. My exceptions were that I changed the broth to chicken, I added some baby carrots to cook along with the cubed steaks, and then I at the end I added two cans of chicken gravy to have extra because I served everything over buttered wide noodles.
After two-and-a-half hours all of it was truly fork tender and AMAZING! We could have licked the plates.I have signed up to your web page to kept informed of further information.
One suggestion, Cris. You need to provide an obvious place that “new” people like me can find to be able to post our comments. Thank you.
Cris says
Hi Rob-
So glad you enjoyed the recipe! Thanks so much for your suggestion. We are working on trying to find some new solutions for our comment section. We aren’t satisfied with it either 😉 Hope you enjoy the site!

Yall seem like a very happy couple and your recipe seems easy to make. Ones hint though. 18 min. For a video is a bit excessive. I just sped through it and watched the motions in fast fwd mode. Love that yall are so sweet on each other but please try to keep in mind that most people just want to get to the point.
Anna says
Is there any way I could cook this on low for longer time? I would love to be able to do that, cuz of work issues.
claudia davis says
Ninja’s rock. I just made General Tsos chicken in mine in about 15 minutes. On another note, after seeing the video just now and making some silly comments, I realized I use your vlog and blog to cook dinner or get ideas or just get a smile from your husband’s quirkiness more than any other blog and vlog. Keep it up. You guys are awesome and so are the recipes.
This is such a basic and simple recipe (and no insult at all intended since these types are the best) that can be used with any protein! I love it.
Cris says
Hi Claudia-
We totally love us some basic and simple recipes 😉 And we are so glad that you enjoy the show!

This looks sooo good. I am one of those who LOVES cubed steak!
I might even try this recipe using (don’t yuck) calf liver. If I do, I think I will cook some onions in butter before browning the meat then add it all in.
Love my Ninja. They are great.
Cris says
msSally-
Onions would be a great addition! Enjoy!

I have made Country Style Steak in the Crockpot for years. I do pretty much what you do but instead of beef broth I use the brown gravy packets and water. I have never tried the dry mustard but will next time. Crockpot is the only way for fork tender steak.
Cris says
Darlene-
That sounds delicious! We will have to give it a try!
Noreen says
This sounds great, I definitely will be trying this soon.
Cris says
Let us know how it goes Noreen! Enjoy!
