Those of you that have been following along have noticed I have been cooking a quite a bit out of my friend Mary’s new cookbookย Deep South Dish: Homestyle Southern Recipesย (thanks for sending me a copy Mary!)

Then we loved this twist to our regular crock pot whole chicken.

Since then, I have been flipping through all the sections marking my MUST-TRY list.

Mary’s recipes remind me of home. They always take that small extra step or two that seem to make such a difference. Her recipes are full on flavor and perfect for beginning or experienced cooks that are wanting to createย dishes that your family will not only love, but also remember.

    I don’t know what recipes are in the cookbook but two meals remind me of my momma and Sunday family dinner – lasagna and fried chicken with mashed red potatoes & creamy gravy. Both make me drool!!!!!

    The dish that most reminds me of home is meatloaf. It has to have a side of mashed potatoes with lots of butter, greens and Jiffy mix cornbread. Top it all off with luscious peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream….mmmmmmm ๐Ÿ™‚

    My favorite comfort food dinner is mini meatloaves, mashed potatoes, snap green beans, sweet corn bread and dessert, vanilla ice cream with fudge topping.

  9. Fishcakes! Use Grouper cheeks or Cobia throat (so tender!), patty the cooked fish with grits, cornmeal, seasoning and egg. Fry, butter while still hot and serve with tomato gravy. SO good!

  10. Because of the US Navy I am now a Northern transplant, so all the recipes remind me of my southern home.

    The Cajun chicken was amazing!!!! Can’t wait for the Mississippi mud cake!!! Sounds delicious!!!!! What’s better than an easy cake loaded with chocolate!!! Mmmmmmm

  17. “Charcoal” steaks and overcooked veggies, were my mom’s specialty! ๐Ÿ™‚ No wonder I disliked so many vegetables as a child. Loved her dearly, but she’d cook those veggies within an inch of their lives! And the steaks were very tasty – with a pat of butter on top, for extra yum factor.
