Aunt Lou here.

Growing up, I had three favorite desserts…Dirty Pudding (with gummy worms, of course!), Persimmon Pudding and Big Red Poke Cake. I have distinct memories for each of these desserts. Dirt Pudding at an outdoor pitch-in at mom and dad’s house. It was in a flower pot with a fake flower stuck in the middle and gummy worms looking like they were coming in and out of the “dirt”. Persimmon Pudding was the dessert of choice for the church ladies who brought copious amounts of food to our house after a drunk driver drove straight into our house when I was a child. And last, but most certainly not least, I remember Bear (obviously, this is a nickname…I didn’t know his real name until I was in my late 20’s!) bringing Big Red Poke Cake to a pitch-in (aka a potluck to people who don’t live in Southern Indiana). I had no idea what it was, but loved it from the very first bite! Since not everyone is lucky enough to have Big Red sold near them, Cris and I thought that we’d name this Crock Pot Cream Soda Poke Cake so that more people could make it. However, if Big Red is sold near you, use it! It is awesome!

How to Make Cream Soda Poke Cake in Crock Pot

  1. Lightly spray your 6-quart slow cooker (I used Sir Hamilton, my Hamilton Beach Programmable Insulated Slow Cooker) with cooking spray
  2. Pour your prepared cake mix in your slow cooker
  3. Place 3-4 paper towels under the lid, cover and cook on high for 1-2 hours
  4. Once your cake passes “the toothpick test”, remove your crock from your slow cooker and let it cool
  5. When your cake is cooled, poke holes in your cake with a toothpick
  6. Mix together your cream soda/Big Red with your strawberry jello
  7. Evenly pour your jello mixture over your cake
  8. In a different bowl, mix together your whipped topping and pudding mix
  9. Spread your topping evenly over the cake

Crock Pot Cream Soda Poke Cake Notes

  • You can serve this right after you make it, but I love having it chilled first. Let me know which you prefer!
  • This is a crowd pleaser. Whether you make it for yourself at home or for a pitch-in/potluck, it will be gobbled up quick!
  • As with any of our recipes, calorie counts and nutritional information varies greatly depending on which products you choose to use when cooking this dish.
  • All slow cookers cook differently, so cooking times are always a basic guideline and should always be tested first in your own slow cooker and time adjusted as needed.

Would I have to change anything when cooking in a 4quart crockpot?

I wouldn’t recommend making this in a 4 quart slow cooker. It is pretty tall/thick in a 6 quart slow cooker. I’m afraid it would be to tall/thick in the center to cook all the way through before the edges burn if it were put into a 4 quart crock pot.

  2. can this be baked in the oven?

      Hi Pat!

Yes, you can. Bake your cake per the directions on the box and then follow the rest of the directions in this post.

      Enjoy!

  4. Can I make this in the casserole crockpot? Cook the same time frame?

      Hi Phil!

I haven’t made it in my casserole crock. I tend to like my 6-quart slow cookers for cakes so they have more room to rise. If you try it in your casserole crock, let me know how it goes! Enjoy!

  5. Could you use other flavors such as orange cream soda and orange jello?
