How to Make Homemade Bread in a Crock Pot
Aunt Lou here.
When I first met Michael, his next door neighbor, Gayle, was a wonderful lady that was generous enough to grace us with a loaf with her homemade bread every once in a while. Since then, I have always loved a good homemade bread. When I realized we did not have a Homemade Crock Pot Bread recipe the other day, I knew I needed to take care of it right away! Now you can enjoy this super easy, and delicious bread too!
I love how easy this bread is to make. Once you proof (activate) the yeast, you do not have to wait for it to rise even once. It can be thrown together in less than 10 minutes and then “baked” in your crock pot in just an hour or two.
The timing can vary greatly depending on your crock pot. So, please watch it closely the first time you make it. You will want to take a peek at the bottom too to make sure it is not getting too done. It could mean the difference between a wonderful success and a frustrating flop. Trust me on this one. Mine was done at approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. I didn’t expect it to be ready until at least an hour and a half. I was wrong. If I hadn’t checked a little early, I could have easily had a burnt bottom. Watch it closely so you can know exactly how your crock pot does with this recipe.
Making bread requires a little bit of flexibility. Depending on environmental factors (or if your flour decides to be contrary!), you may need to adjust this recipe. If it is too sticky, add a little more flour. If it is too dry, add a little more water. Make notes on your recipe what adjustments were needed for your kitchen for future reference, and most importantly, enjoy! 😉

Homemade Crock Pot Bread
Ingredients
Instructions
- Place a piece of parchment paper in your 6 quart slow cooker so that it goes up each side (so your bread doesn't stick to your insert) and turn slow cooker on high to preheat.
- Dissolve your yeast in warm water (the water needs to be 105-115 degrees F) and set aside.
- Combine salt, sugar and flour in a large bowl.
- Add your yeast mixture and oil to your flour mixture, mixing until well combined with a lightly greased wooden spoon.
- Oil your hands lightly and knead for approximately 5 minutes (It is ready to form into a round loaf when it is smooth and elastic).
- Form into a round loaf and place in the middle of the parchment paper.
- Place a couple paper towels under your lid and place your lid slightly angled so that some of the moisture can escape, but the heat will be retained.
- Cook for 1 hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours on high, checking after an hour of cooking, rotating insert if slow cooker doesn't cook evenly, and keeping close watch the first time you make it to learn how quickly your specific crock pot cooks it. (The internal temperature of the middle of the loaf should be right around 195 degree F.)
- If a crispy crust is desired, brush top of loaf with melted butter and place on a cookie sheet on the middle shelf with broiler on high for approximately 1 minute (watching continually) to crisp the crust and make it lightly golden.
- Place on a cooling rack and slice once the loaf is cool enough to handle.

Notes
- Watch the bottom of your loaf closely the first time you make it so it doesn’t become too brown. Once you know how your unit cooks the bread, make a note on your recipe to reference for future use.
