How to Make Salisbury Steak in an Instant Pot
Turn your 6-quart Instant Pot on and to the Saute setting. While it is heating up, mix together your beef, eggs and onion soup mix. Make 12 small, thin patties out of your beef mixture. Once your Instant Pot says, “HOT”, put in your butter and wait for it to melt. Once your butter is melted, add in 3-4 patties and let them brown for 4-5 minutes on each side . Remove browned patties and put them on a plate while you brown the rest. Mix together your soups and broth in a large bowl. When all of your steaks are on your plate, turn off the saute feature and pour in about 1/4 of your soup mixture. Top your soup with a layer of Salisbury steaks and repeat layers, spreading your soup mixture on top of your steaks, ending with the rest of your soup mixture. Put your lid on and seal it. Turn on meat setting for 25 minutes. Let it stand for 15 minutes after it goes off (do not let the warm feature kick on) and then quick release, if needed. Serve steaks with gravy over them.
Instant Pot Salisbury Steak Notes:
- I had some of my steaks all apart while I was browning them, it was fine with me because I knew they would still be delicious. However, I wanted to share with you that if you make larger patties, they are more likely to fall apart. So you will want to make small, thin patties so they will stay together and cook all the way through.

- Make sure your patties are thin. They will shrink up some in width as they brown, and thin patties stay together better.
- If you use an 8-quart electric pressure cooker, you may want to use an extra 1/2 cup of broth to help bring it up to pressure.

Do you think this would work well with ground turkey instead of ground beef?
Aunt Lou says
I haven’t tried this recipe with ground turkey, but think it might work since you brown the steaks before putting them all in the instant pot. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

Did u use the grease from hamburger patties to thicken sauce or can I discard it still be ok
Aunt Lou says
Hi Sheena!
I didn’t have that much grease leftover from my patties. You should be fine either way.

I realize you probably won’t see this before I try to make this for dinner, but I’ll ask anyway. Just in case. If I cut this in half, does the cook time reduce also?
Angela says
I ended up cooking for 15 minutes then NR 15 minutes which released it completely. I was worried about the dreaded “Burn” notice so I made sure to scrape all the little bits up after I browned the patties. Then I poured in broth only, added the patties, poured mushroom soup in between and on top of patties. Turned out delicious!

I’m so glad it turned out so well for you!!! Thanks for taking the time to let us know!

I tried this recipe, following all the directions and within a minute of the timer starting, my pot told me the food was burning. Could you think of what i might have done wrong
Aunt Lou says
I’m so sorry to hear this Jane! I’m not sure why it would have gone to burn. Next time, I recommend putting in your trivet and placing your steaks on top of the trivet. That should keep your pot from giving you the burn error. I hope this helps.
