How to Make Creek Potatoes in a Crock Pot
Aunt Lou here.
When Cris and I were kids, Creek Potatoes were a staple at our church’s annual chicken dinner and other pitch-ins (also known as potlucks for anyone who isn’t a southern Hoosier 😉 ). Now you can make these amazing potatoes in your crock pot!
This week is an unusual week in my house. We are just coming off of a holiday weekend, and tomorrow is mine and Michael’s 10th wedding anniversary. Then the day after tomorrow is my birthday! So, we didn’t need a ton of potatoes. I only used 2 medium sized potatoes, but that will be perfect for my family of four. If you need more potatoes for your family or want to take these delicious potatoes to a pitch-in, you can easily double or even triple this recipe. You will need to make a bigger foil “boat”, use a larger crock pot and adjust the cooking time as needed, but it could be done easy peasy!
What You Will Need
Ingredient Needed
- 2 medium size potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly, divided
- 1/2 medium onion, sliced, divided
- 4 pieces bacon, divided
- salt and pepper to taste
Equipment Needed
- Vegetable peeler
- Sharp knife (I have had this knife for a few years now and sharpen it after cleaning it with this sharpener, and it still cuts through a potato like butter after years of use! Rada is not sponsoring this post, I just love the knives I have purchased from them and thought I would share.)
- Cutting board
- Aluminum foil
- 4 quart crock pot
Time Needed
- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Cooking Time: 4 to 6 hours on low or 2 to 3 hours on high

Can you cook the bacon first hubby hates soggy bacon?
I haven’t tried this with pre-cooked bacon, but think it might work. I’m not sure that it will still be super crispy after cooking with the potatoes, but it would definitely be crispier than the original version. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!
I haven’t made these yet but they sound very yummy! Could I use my crock pot liners or should I just use the aluminum foil? We have aluminum foil, I was just wondering if I could use the other one. Does the bacon make it kind of like a sauce from the bacon grease? I’m just wondering if my mom will say they are to dry. Could you add some butter? I don’t want to make it & have her say they are dry. She has been having swallowing problems & she says some stuff is to to dry & she has problems swallowing it. Can’t wait to try this!
I would recommend sticking with the aluminum foil. When you close up the boat, it keeps all the moisture in with the potatoes to help them cook up.
There isn’t really a sauce, but the potatoes are very moist and the flavor from the bacon cooks into the potatoes. They are divine!
Have a question: Is the bacon supposed to be for eating or just for flavoring because in the photo provided, it doesn’t look like it’s cooked through!
The bacon is cooked by the time the potatoes are done. The bacon isn’t crispy by any means, but it is cooked through. Enjoy!
Hi 🙂 Do you add butter to your recipe?
I did not use butter, and the flavor is amazing!
