How to Make Homemade Cinnamon Rolls in a Crock Pot
Aunt Lou here.
For years I have been making homemade cinnamon rolls…almost 11 years to be exact. You see, the first time I made them was right before mine and Michael’s first date. Imagine his surprise when he received a pan of freshly made cinnamon rolls on top of the gift of going on a date with me! 😉 When thinking up ideas for recipes, I decided to try to come up with this Homemade Crock Pot Cinnamon Roll recipe. It was a HUGE hit at my house, and I hope it is at yours as well!
I wasn’t sure how my original oven recipe would do in the crock pot, so I decided to use Momma’s yeast roll recipe as a base to start from, and tweak to become this amazing recipe.
If you are new to baking, it can be scary to try and make something from scratch. Trust me, I understand. However, this is a pretty straight forward recipe. Take a deep breath, read through the recipe instructions slowly and take it one step at a time. You can do this! Seriously, if I can learn how to make things from scratch, you can too! (I once “made” cookies that refused to bake and struggled with making Hamburger Helper when I first started living on my own. So, I truly do understand being scared of cooking and baking.) I have faith in you and know you will love this recipe!

Homemade Crock Pot Cinnamon Rolls
Ingredients
- 1 Package Dry Yeast
- ¼ Cup Warm Water
- 1 Cup Milk scalded
- ¼ Cup Oil
- 1 Cup Sugar divided
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 3.5 Cups Flour divided
- 1 large Egg beaten
- 5 tablespoons butter melted
- cinnamon
Icing
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2.5 tablespoons milk (2-3 tablespoons depending how thick you want your icing to be)
- 1 tablespoon butter melted
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons Almond Extract (We love a stronger almond flavor in the icing. If you do not, feel free to start with less than 2 and add a bit at a time until you reach the desired flavoring.)
Instructions
- Dissolve your yeast in warm water and set aside.
- Mix your scalded milk with your oil, sugar and salt and let cool to lukewarm.
- Add 1½ cups sifted flour to your your milk mixture.
- Then add your yeast and beaten egg, mixing until well combined.
- Blend into your mixture 1-2 cups of flour until a soft dough forms.
- Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl, turning once to coat.
- Set in warm place until your dough is 1½ to double in size.
- Flatten with a rolling pin into a rectangle with about 1/4 inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Spread your butter evenly across your dough, sprinkle sugar and cinnamon evenly across the top (use as little or as much cinnamon as you desire).
- Starting on the far long end, tightly roll your dough into a long log.
- Cut dough log into 12 rolls. (To make it easy, I cut my log in half. Then I cut each half in half, making quarters. Then I cut the quarters into three rolls each.)
- Place the 12 rolls spaced evenly in a lightly greased casserole crock pot.
- Cover and cook on low until rolls have doubled in size.
- Once rolls have doubled in size, wipe the condensation off of your lid, place paper towels or a flour sack tea towel pulled tightly under your lid and change heat setting to high.
- Cook on high for one hour to one hour 15 minutes, turning your insert halfway through if your unit does not cook evenly, until the rolls are done
- If desired, place rolls on the lower rack with your broiler on high for 1-2 minutes, until tops are slightly golden. *WATCH CONTINUALLY*
- Mix together icing ingredients and drizzle over rolls and serve warm.
