How to Make Bourbon Chicken in a Slow Cooker
UPDATED with a video from Mikey.
When I say I was on a hunt for a recipe, I mean I was on a HUNT! Of course, I started with my favorite Gooseberry Patch Cookbooks. I didn’t find Bourbon Chicken, but I did find Kentucky Wildcat Chicken in What’s For Dinner?. It looked pretty yummy, but not exactly what I had in mind…although, I do think I will be seeing if I can figure out how to convert it to a crock pot recipe!
Then I looked online and did a little research. It seems there is a little bit of a feud over how this dear chicken recipe got its name. Some say it is because it was created by a chef on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Others say it has its origins in Kentucky, the state with all the bourbon. Regardless, bourbon isn’t a drink of choice in this family, so I opted to use chicken broth. If this highly offends you or you just have bourbon in the house, feel free to use bourbon instead of chicken broth.
So just where did I find this recipe? I didn’t. I wanted to make it right. then. So I took a little bit of creative license on this one and gave it a try! Now, I know that can be dangerous at times, but this time it was awesome! I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out and the hubs and Ryder agreed!

Loved this recipe! Was delicious. Although my sauce didn’t look dark like it does in the photo. It was more light brown in color. Did I do it wrong?

Can you cook this on high for 2 hours?
Aunt Lou says
I haven’t tried cooking this recipe on high but think it might work. The timing will depend on how hot your crock pot cooks, so watch it closely the first time you make so you can adjust the cooking time as needed. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes.

I haven’t tried adding it to the crock pot at the beginning. It might work, but I can’t say for certain without testing it first. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

I only have one problem with my first time making this Bourbon Chicken. That I did not double the recipe. It was very, very good but between three people it did not go far enough. That’s ok as I printed off the recipe and will be making it again very soon. I look forward to trying some of your other crock recipes
Aunt Lou says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Doubling it sounds like a great idea to me! Let me know how it goes if you give it a try!

Do you use chicken breasts or thighs? That might make a difference on the cook time.
Aunt Lou says
Hi Kathleen!
You cut them into bite size pieces, so you can use whichever you prefer. Growing up, our family was always a dark meat family, but my husband love white meat. It is totally up to you! Enjoy!

Tanya Tissaaratchy says
1 tbsp of water to 1 tbsp of corn starch
remove chicken from crock pot, put it off to the side. Place sauce in crockpot to a pan for reduction process, once water/corn starch mixture combined add to pan. Cook on high until thickens but doesn’t char the sauce mixture. Hope this helps!
Fran says
Can you use this as a freezer meal?
Aunt Lou says
