Crock Pot Recipes Using Canned Goods

Updated 3/16/2020

Cris here. Whether you are stuck at home or find yourself very busy juggling all the things, pantry cooking can help put dinner on the table quick and easy.

Below is a post we did with Cans Get You Cooking a while back when they asked me to share with you a little about how my pantry helps me feed my family on busy school days. I thought it might come in handy for those of us that are trying to cook through things we might already have on hand.

I have always been a big fan of the convenience canned food offers me. By maintaining a well stocked pantry, I have a lot of options even when I do not have a lot of time. Aside from convenience, I also love the kind of flavors you can add to a dish straight from the can. Substituting chicken broth for water will almost always take the flavor up a notch in any crock pot recipe. Additionally, there are many canned beans, tomatoes, corn, etc. that have delicious additions like garlic, onion, basil, peppers, chilies and more already added into the can.

I love using these kinds of ingredients to make a nutritious home cooked meal for my family even when our schedules are crazy. But how does the nutritional content of canned foods stack up to their frozen and fresh counterparts? Studies conducted by researchers at Michigan State University, UC Davis and Oregon State University all concluded that canned foods have similar (or better) nutritional profiles as their fresh or frozen equivalents.

Once or twice a month, we have a house full of friends show up on our door step and we play games. But just about the first thing they all do, is head for the fridge to see what new recipe I have down loaded from you all. I think they are happier to read my fridge door then to talk to me. So this weekend I am feeding all these very hungry men, “Slow Cooker Beans and Weenies.” It just sounded so good and easy. Let you know next week what they all thought.

    1. Swan Shepherd says:

Oh yeah, in my pantry…Any kind of veggie and believe me there are allot of them. Lately I have been trying to get more canned meats in there, but hubby isn’t big on them. Lots of soups and sauces to make stuff stretch farther.

  20. I would also like to make Fiesta Mac and Cheese

  21. I like to keep tomato soup on hand. Always good in casserole but always great with a grilled cheese sandwich.

Hi Cris! I always have canned tomatoes…all types! Whole, diced, stewed, Italian, tomato paste, tomato sauce, etc. Gotta keep tomato products on hand for oh-so-many recipes! ๐Ÿ™‚

Bonus: I’d like to try the One Pot Sausage Dinner

  23. Joyce Martineau says:

The one pot sausage dinner and the fiesta slow cooker pork chops sound really good! I really like the recipes you post. Thank you!

I always have all types of canned tomatoes, tomato sauce and paste, green beans, pinto beans, green chilies, enchilada sauce and salsa, carrots, sweet potatoes, cream soups, gravies and chicken, beef, and vegetable broths, tuna, salmon, and most likely some I forgot to mention.

I love using a slow cooker for easy, ready when you are and delicious meals!

  24. Mary in Idaho says:

the pot roast will be my first choice to make. I can’t eat tomatoes, so I’m always looking for meals without tomatoes. It is a medical reason. Not a personal preference thing with tomatoes. I like slow cooker recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Or else the cost of ingredients is not wise for us. I forgot the other question!! I know it was some thing about can goods. I always have green beans in the pantry. I also have some canned soup, but try to avoid the high sodium most of the time. I do a lot with all flavor of low sodium broths. It’s always exciting to do something yummy with a cheap cut of meat in a slow cooker. I just ‘found’ your blog a couple days ago so I’m excited to see what I can glean from it. My slow cooker is about 30 years old so this contest is fun too!! Thanks for all the work you obviously put in to this blog.
