Below is a post we did with Cans Get You Cooking a while back when they asked me to share with you a little about how my pantry helps me feed my family on busy school days. I thought it might come in handy for those of us that are trying to cook through things we might already have on hand.

I have always been a big fan of the convenience canned food offers me. By maintaining a well stocked pantry, I have a lot of options even when I do not have a lot of time. Aside from convenience, I also love the kind of flavors you can add to a dish straight from the can. Substituting chicken broth for water will almost always take the flavor up a notch in any crock pot recipe. Additionally, there are many canned beans, tomatoes, corn, etc. that have delicious additions like garlic, onion, basil, peppers, chilies and more already added into the can.
I love using these kinds of ingredients to make a nutritious home cooked meal for my family even when our schedules are crazy. But how does the nutritional content of canned foods stack up to their frozen and fresh counterparts? Studies conducted by researchers at Michigan State University, UC Davis and Oregon State University all concluded that canned foods have similar (or better) nutritional profiles as their fresh or frozen equivalents.

Green beans and want to try one pot sausage supper
I only use frozen vegetables (less sodium) but I ALWAYS keep pork & beans or black beans in the cabinet. I’m going to try the party beans recipe!
I try to keep Mandarin Oranges on hand all the time.
I used canned peas for lunch yesterday.
Fiesta mac & cheese
I always have rotel on hand
soups and veggies are a big help
We are going to try the Crock Pot Sausage Corn Chowder. Sounds really Good.
We always have canned corn in our pantry.
I always keep creamed soups (mushroom, chicken, celery, onion, broccoli, etc…) in my pantry along with evaporated milk, anything tomatoes, and canned chicken.
I am most interested in trying the Fiesta pork chops, as that is our favorite meat and anything mexican is good to me.
Keep canned meats and protein rich (in case of getting cut off from store – live in the toolies), chicken broth and canned fruits. Love the Penne Pasta recipe (with a few of my own alterations….). Would like to try some shrimp recipes (but have one non-fishy eater…)….
The one-pot peppers and sausage look good. I want to try it out. I always have tomatoes on hand.
