How to Make Onion Roast in a Crock Pot
Aunt Lou here.
I’m all about easy recipes with ingredients you most likely already have in your cabinets. As Plato said, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” That is very true for this recipe. I needed to feed my family, but really did not want to make a trip to the store. And now you have this yummy Onion Crock Pot Roast recipe! I bet you great folks will love this recipe as much as my family did!
This recipe checks off all the boxes for a go to recipe for me. Easy to throw together, delicious and cooks all day. It is a great recipe for a work night. You can throw it together in mere minutes in the morning, and it can cook all day long! Not only will you have a delicious roast waiting for you when you arrive home, but your house will smell amazing!
What You Will Need
Ingredients Needed
- 3 lb beef roast (Your choice of roast. When cooking a beef roast on low with a long cooking time, it can take a tough roast and make it fall apart tender.)
- 1 oz packet onion soup mix
- 10.75 oz Golden Mushroom Soup
- 1 cup beef broth
Equipment Needed
- Measuring Cup
- 6 quart crock pot
Time Needed
- Prep Time: Less than 5 minutes
- Cooking Time: 8-10 hours on low (I do not recommend cooking on high. To have a juicy, tender, fall apart beef roast, cooking low and slow is the best cooking method.)

I added an extra can of cream of mushroom soup and I sliced a large onion and covered the roast can’t wait to see how it turns out
I only have a 6 Qt crockpot, is that ok? Should I reduce cook time?
Thank you!
I haven’t tried making this in a 6 quart crock pot. You could reduce the cooking time or use the method where you put a heat safe bowl inside your 6 quart and put water in the insert, but NOT in the bowl, about halfway up the side of the bowl. You will put all the recipe ingredients in the bowl and cook for the original cooking times. As always, make sure you watch it closely the first time you make it so you can adjust the cooking time for your specific unit. Enjoy!
Love it! I always put the roast on top of the carrots & potato. Now that I have tried this away it’s better!! Thanks Love your recipes!
