How to Make Dinner Rolls in a Slow Cooker

Aunt Lou here.

Many times when we post a method or recipe that is typically an oven thing, we will get at least a few people asking why anyone would do this in a crock pot. However, we also receive emails or comments from people thanking us because the recipe saved then when their oven broke down or while they were doing a kitchen renovation. This Slow Cooker Dinner Rolls method is also great when you are making a big dinner (like a holiday feast) and your oven is occupied.

I have tried this out multiple times, and I was able to get 9 Sister Schubert frozen dinner rolls in my 6 quart slow cooker and 8 in my casserole crock pot. Also, just like other recipes, it is important to watch these rolls closely the first time you make them so you can know exactly how long it takes in your crock pot. The exact timing varies for me depending on which of my various slow cookers I used when doing this. I hope your rolls come out just as wonderful and delicious as mine!

Ingredients

  • 9 frozen dinner rolls (or 8 dinner rolls if using a casserole crock pot)
  • Garnish: stick butter

Instructions

  • Cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the bottom of your crock pot and place in the bottom of your 6 quart crock pot or casserole crock pot.
  • Spray the parchment paper with a light layer of cooking spray
  • Place your frozen dinner rolls in your crock pot. (I could fit 9 rolls in my 6 quart slow cooker and 8 rolls in my casserole slow cooker.)
  • Cover and cook on low for 1-2 hours, your rolls will thaw and rise, if it needs to raise. (If using a roll that does not need to rise, the timing will be closer to an hour. If you are using a roll that needs to rise, the timing will be closer to 2 hours.)
  • Once your rolls have thawed and (if needed) risen, turn you crock pot to high for 1-1 1/2 hours, until your rolls are done. Watch them closely so the bottoms do not burn.
  • If you want your rolls to be more golden on top, place your rolls on a baking sheet and broil for 60-90 seconds, watching them continually because they can go from perfect to burnt very quickly if you look away for even a few seconds.
  • Brush your baked rolls with your stick butter.
