Meal Planning on a Budget

Aunt Lou here.

This week we are going to save money by mainly using recipes that use lots of canned foods. Not only is the cost of canned foods generally cheaper, you may already have some of these ingredients sitting in your cabinets, lazy Susan or pantry! I always love being able to use ingredients I have on hand for a recipe. It makes my grocery shopping trip shorter, since I have fewer things to pick up, and cheaper!

If you need to adjust the amount of servings in a recipe so that you can have leftovers the next night (or not have too much food leftover), we have a great tool on our recipe cards to help you out! In the red block at the top of each recipe card, there is a blue number after “Servings:”. If you are on a computer, you will hover over the blue number, and a slide bar will appear. If you are on a phone, you just have to tap the blue number for the slide bar to appear. Pull that bar up or down until the blue number is the amount of servings you need. This will adjust the ingredient amounts to fit your serving needs. Be aware that depending on how much you change the amount of ingredients, you may need to adjust the size of slow cooker you are using and/or the amount of time that it is being cooked. So, as we always say, watch it closely the first time you make it.
