Below is a post we did with Cans Get You Cooking a while back when they asked me to share with you a little about how my pantry helps me feed my family on busy school days. I thought it might come in handy for those of us that are trying to cook through things we might already have on hand.

I have always been a big fan of the convenience canned food offers me. By maintaining a well stocked pantry, I have a lot of options even when I do not have a lot of time. Aside from convenience, I also love the kind of flavors you can add to a dish straight from the can. Substituting chicken broth for water will almost always take the flavor up a notch in any crock pot recipe. Additionally, there are many canned beans, tomatoes, corn, etc. that have delicious additions like garlic, onion, basil, peppers, chilies and more already added into the can.
I love using these kinds of ingredients to make a nutritious home cooked meal for my family even when our schedules are crazy. But how does the nutritional content of canned foods stack up to their frozen and fresh counterparts? Studies conducted by researchers at Michigan State University, UC Davis and Oregon State University all concluded that canned foods have similar (or better) nutritional profiles as their fresh or frozen equivalents.

I always have canned tomatoes, tuna and black beans on hand!
I like to keep low sodium chicken broth on hand too.
The Crock Pot Italian Chicken sounds and looks delicious so I want to try that too.

To be totally honest to give you the list of things I do keep in my pantry would probably harder than the list of things that I don’t keep on hand in my pantry… I think that canned and Frozen together probably make up 80% of what I keep in my home at all times. After that it’s just what kind of protein have I picked up that will fit in my slow cooker and how many easy things can I slap together.I’m thinking I’m going to get some really neat boutiki sausages and make that sausage dinner because it sound simple and heavenly for my son who adores sausages. Keep up the great work!! Love your site and adore how easy it makes my life when I’m stuck for meal ideas!!
We always have Rotel and cream of chicken soup in our pantry.
I am looking forward to trying the Italian chicken! I’ve made the Italian pot roast, it’s delicious!!!
I always have no less than 2 cans of Rotel tomatoes and green chilis and canned nibblet corn on hand. I have many other vegetables also, but these 2 items can be used in so many recipes.
I always have cream of mushroom soup on hand, it can be used with anything for cooking! Tonight I am making One Pot Sausage Dinner and want to try my hand on your Chile Verde Soup next! I work anywhere from 7 – 10 hr days, so the crockpot is the best invention EVER!
I always have yellow cake mixes on hand because you can make a cake, a cobbler, cookies, etc, etc, Since I love green beans, I’m going to try the green bean recipe.
I would love to try the crock pot Italian chicken.
I always have canned tomatoes on hand.
I always try to keep in stock green beans, cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, and tomato soup. Kidney beans and refried beans are also staple items that I call on in some of my recipes.
I always stock mac & cheese ingredients and green beans. Grand girls love it.
I always have green beans, corn, and tomato sauce in the pantry. I keep beans and chili too. I think I’ll try the Spanish rice. My mum made it from scratch all the time, but I can never get it right.
I use a lot of different soups in my cooking. Cream of mushroom or cream of celery in my roast. Also cream of potato and cream of clam chowder . I make Clam Chowder with can soups. I have a great recipe.
But if you talk to my grands kids they would tell you spaghetti O’s with meat balls. I have to keep those in house cause for some reason the kids love them. LOL
showboat pork n beans is always on hand. I am going to try the chicken and stuffing casserole next.

We always have some kind of creamed soup on hand – either cream of mushroom (with or without garlic) and cream of chicken. The Italian Pot Roast looks yummy!
I always have beans on hand. Navy, kidney, pintos, black beans. Love beans and use in many recipes. Not to mention they are gluten free and great source of protein.

I buy diced tomatoes and black beans like they’re going outta style, I never have less than at least 12 of each in my pantry!
