How to Make Cherry Dumplings in a Crock Pot

Aunt Lou here.

When I made the first version of this recipe (Apple Dumplings), it was over a decade ago with my then boyfriend (now husband) asked me to go to a cookout with him. I was delighted when his friends told me that I had to bring these dumplings to every pitch-in (potluck for those who are not from southern Indiana). Since then, I have made this recipe in many different ways. I have made the apple dumplings in the crock pot and also made Crock Pot Peach Dumplings for my peach loving Dad. While I love apple and peach desserts, my favorite kind of desserts are cherry desserts. So, making this tried and true recipe in cherry just makes sense to me, and it is perfect with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream. Yum!

I made this in one of my 6 quart slow cookers I have used many times and know how it cooks. You will want to make this in your tried and true 6 quart slow cooker. If you make this recipe in a slow cooker that cooks hot or a slow cooker that you don’t know if it cooks hot or not, you might end up with burnt sides and an uncooked center. However, if you cook this in a slow cooker that doesn’t cook hot, you will end up with a delicious treat that is sure to please!

Ingredients

  • 2 cans crescent rolls
  • 20 oz cherry pie filling
  • 12 oz can Mountain Dew or equivalent…I use Kroger’s Citrus Drop
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Optional: vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  • Spray your 6 quart crock pot with cooking spray and unroll one tube of crescent rolls in the bottom.
  • Spoon your cherry pie filling on top of crescent rolls and spread out evenly.
  • Unroll your second tube of crescent rolls of top of pie filling.
  • Slice your butter into a microwave safe bowl with your sugar and cinnamon.
  • Heat in your microwave until your butter is melted (about a minute in my microwave) and mix well.
  • Pour your mixture on top of all your dumplings.
  • Pour your can of Mountain Dew around the outside of the insert (if you pour it on top of the dumplings, then the cinnamon sugar mixture won't stay on top!)
  • Cover and cook on high for 5-7 hours, turning halfway through the cooking time if your insert does not cook evenly.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
