Found your site and love it. Tried this recipe and it was so good. Only difference I did was instead of pkg reg. onion soup I used mushroom onion soup mix. Also added sliced mushrooms. My husband really loved it. For can soup I had to go with low sodium because of recent heart attack. All in all it was fantastic. Already searching for more recipes on your site to try. Thanks and have an awesome day!
So glad you found a way to make this recipe work for you and enjoyed it! Thank you for your kind words. Comments like yours make our day!
5-6 hrs on low???..Had to cook it 2 more hours on high
It sounds like your slow cooker cooks cooler than the one we tested this recipe with. That is why we always say, “All slow cookers cook differently, so cooking times are always a basic guideline and should always be tested first in your own slow cooker and time adjusted as needed.” I hope you enjoyed it once it was done!
Easy, good and tastes delicious!
I have cooked it 4 hours on high and it worked perfectly!

I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed this recipe! It makes really makes our day.
Hello have you ever tired using frozen meat? And still have it come out tender? We purchase a whole beef each year and it comes cut up and frozen. I tend to always forget to set it out to defrost. Or do you have any recipes where you can use frozen beef.
Hi Richelle!
Food safety experts do not recommend cooking frozen meat in a slow cooker due to the lower cooking temperatures. However, if you have an Instant Pot or Electric Pressure Cooker, you can cook frozen meat in it. You can find our Instant Pot recipes here: https://www.recipesthatcrock.com/recipe-index/?fwp_recipe_index_type=main-dishes%2Cinstant-pot
Hope this helps!

that round steak recipe is exactly the same as the one I’ve used for years and years. Only way we differ is that I usually add two cans of cream of mushroom soup as we like lots of gravy and it leaves enough gravy for the leftovers. Sometimes I’ll also add a can of drained mushrooms.
Hi–thanks for this, my husband will love it! One little problem–he hates mushroom, so which other cream-of soup would make a good substitute. Also, can you offer any recommendations on when/how to add veggies to the recipe? Specifically potatoes and/or baby carrots. When would you add them, and what adjustments need to be made to the liquids etc. Thanks so much!! Rebecca
I haven’t tried this with the adjustments you have mentioned. You might try Cris’ Cream Soup Substitute recipe (https://www.recipesthatcrock.com/cream-soup-substitute-recipes/) in place of the cream of mushroom soup. If you don’t want to make it yourself, you could try cream of celery. It would change the flavor a bit, but might work well. As for the veggies, I would use a russet potato cut into large pieces for the longer cooking time. The baby carrots should work too. I would add in more water for the veggies. It will make the gravy thinner, but sounds like a delicious alteration to the recipe! If you give a try, let me know what you think!

Please tell me why in the world would you find it necessary to spray the crockpot with cooking oil, when all the liquids are going in!!!!!??????????
Hi Susan!
It just helps make clean up easier. If you would like to skip that step, feel free!
Aunt Lou
Now you can find crockpot liners in every store so cleanup is a not a problem ever again!
Hi! Your recipe sounds quite delightful… Is there any way and/or recipe you can refer me to where I can cook the meat on high? My fiance will be home soon (hopefully) and I think cooking it on low would take waaaay too long… Thanks in advance!
Hi Nina!
I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to reply to your comment the day you asked! Due to time constraints we are not often able to answer same day. However, for future use, I’ll answer your question. In general, if you are switching from cooking on low to cooking on high, you will cut the cooking time in half. When using a slow cooker for beef though, low is recommended. With beef, the longer, slower cooking time can take even a tough cut of meat and make it incredibly tender. So, if you need to cook beef on high, you will want to do it with a tender cut of beef.
I hope this helps!

This recipe sounds great I’m making a round steak tonight in mine but my girlfriend can’t have mushrooms or onions is there any way to substitute those?
Hi, Avoiding all soups because of high salt content. What do you recommend?
Hi Cody and Carolyn!
This recipe’s flavor would change drastically without the ingredients you need to omit. However, you can use our Recipe Finder (link below) to find recipes that will better fit your needs! I hope this helps and you find recipes that you love!

Try making it with tomato soup or sauce. Add some bell peppers for added flavor.
Great idea Jane!
The flavour was outstanding but I wouldn’t use round steak in this recipe. It was tender but chewy. Perhaps a tenderized version or cube steak would be better.
I have made this several times…it is never chewy…I cook four hours on high the remainder of time on low.
Cube steak IS ROUND STEAK, LOLOL
This is delicious! Not everyone at my house can have mushrooms, so I substituted a jar of brown gravy for the soup – worked perfectly!
Hi Jill!
Great substitution! Glad evenyone enjoyed it!
Aunt Lou
Did you brown your met first?
Hi Laura!
No need to brown your meat before putting it in your crock pot! Enjoy!
Aunt Lou
I always do it seals in the flavor. Only takes a few minutes
love to cook in my crock pot. i make my dogs food in it.
this recipe looks so good & easy. i would add some potatoes & carrots in & have a full meal.
thank you
talk about an easy clean up, I use the liners in my crock pot. can’t do without them now
family does not eat onions is there an alternative to the soup mix?
Hi Sylvia!
You could try an au jus or brown gravy mix. Let me know how it turns out. Enjoy!
Aunt Lou
Hey Steve, your comment On APRIL 14 was not totally correct. CUBE STEAK can be any cut of meat, sometimes left over scraps of a couple of different cuts of beef added together into the cuber/tenderizer and out comes the “CUBE STEAK”
