How to Make Steak and Gravy in a Crock Pot
Aunt Lou here.
So we all know that in this house we are suckers for a great deal on meat. Well, our freezer is still completely packed, so when Michael found a good deal on a flat iron steak, I needed to use it right up.
I saw this Slow Cooker Steak with Gravy recipe from Gooseberry Patch’s Speedy Slow-Cooker Recipes and was a little leery. You see, to say I am a picky eater would be quite the understatement. However, I married a human garbage disposal who loves anything and everything except peas (Go figure?). So I thought I would give it a try since it sounded like something Michael would love.
I am so very glad that I did! Roast is my all time favorite, but finding a good roast on sale is next to impossible. With this recipe, our flat iron steak tasted like a juicy, delicious roast! Mommy score!

Do you think you could put small baby potatoes under the steak to cook those at same time?
Hi CM!
I haven’t tried this with baby potatoes, but that does sound like a delicious addition! Depending on how many potatoes you add to the recipe, you might want to add more water. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

This is amazing! My family loves it!
I’m so glad to hear it Regena! We love it too! Happy New Year!
Made this yesterday. I’ve never used flat iron steak. It was amazing!! The only thing I did different was add a splash of sherry. Which I always do with anything that includes cream of mushroom.
Thanks so much!
I’m so glad you think it is amazing too! It is one of my favorites! Thanks for taking the time to leave such an uplifting comment!

I have been making this recipe for a few years now. It is so versatile. I double the sauce mix. We normally love extra sauce but this is so delicious that we HAVE to double it. Then I use a combination of soups. You can use Cream of Mushroom, Golden Mushroom, or Beefy Mushroom. I find that the Golden Mushroom and Cream of Mushroom combo is perfect. Also, if you want a more beefy flavor substitute the onion soup mix for the beefy soup mix. If I want to get fancy ill saute some mushrooms and onions to go over top of it for those that want it. Also we put it over rice. It gets too heavy with mashed potatoes and rice is preferable by all in my family. Delicious as written or with the changes listed.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We love hearing success stories from our readers and how they make our recipes their own!
Have you tried all our other versions of this recipe? You can find them here: https://www.recipesthatcrock.com/recipe-index/?fwp_search=with%20gravy I hope you enjoy them as much as you do this one!

Awesome!! A bit salty, but we serve it with very lightly salted mashed potatoes or unsalted, sautéed mushrooms, and that seems to even things out. Oh.. and I double the soups and water because the gravy is fabulous!
So glad you enjoyed it, Kathy! Thanks for stopping by to let us know!
I had some nilgai steaks in the freezer that I used, cut the meat into cubes after it was cooked and added fresh mushrooms during the last hour, served with rice and steamed veggies. I have a couple of finicky eaters and three loved and asked for seconds! My husband likes more spice so he added chopped Serrano pepper to his at the table (I don’t put hot pepper while cooking as I have little kids). I will be making this again!
I have two steaks with bone in and about an inch thick. Is this still ok to use?
Hi Michael!
I haven’t tried it with a bone-in steak, but think it could work. I hope you enjoy it as much we do!
Aunt Lou
I made this steak with gravy, and I didn’t have cream of mushroom soup, so I used cream of celery it was great, but it was ungodly salty. How can I cut the salt down?
I made your crock pot roast with potatoes &carrots & both my son & husband & i loved it they ask for seconds so this will stay with our once a month menu plan from now on thank you so much. It was su purb.
Hi Pam!
I’m so glad you liked it! Thanks for letting us know. One of my favorite parts of doing this is hearing when someone loves a recipe!

Aunt Lou…this recipe made me happy. I’m going to eat it for breakfast with toast. No kidding. It is delicious. Thanks!!
Ha! Love it, Julie! You would SO get along with my husband!

What is flat iron steak? I’m Canadian and have never heard of this cut.
It is a cut that is delicious if you ever happen across one! It is long and narrow and usually 2-3 lbs.
A round steak will also work well in this recipe. Enjoy!
This looked both yummy & easy! But can I cook it on high if I don’t have 6-8 hours to cook it on low? If cooking on high will work, then do you have recommendations?
Thank you!!
I would try cutting the time in half when cooking on high. I would check it at 3 hours and see how the meat is coming to see how much longer it will need, if any. Enjoy!
Use a can of cola (any kind, I use Diet Pepsi) instead of water. The gravy it makes is delicious!
Thanks for the tip!
What can I substitute for the dry onion soup mix? Onions and I don’t get along very well. 🙂
You could try a brown gravy mix. Enjoy!
is there a substitute for the mushroom soup mix?
You could try replacing the Cream of Mushroom soup with any cream based soup. To be honest, I don’t like mushrooms or anything to do with them, but I loved this recipe.
Cream of celery. We are not mushroom fans.
I got a slow cooker for christmas and have been looking for a delicious steak recipe as my first meal. I’m going to make this tomorrow 😀
Awesome! I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! 🙂
The Golden Mushroom Soup isn’t a mix, it’s actually a canned version of regular cream of mushroom soup.
I am making this right now. I didn’t have plain onion soup mix, so I substituted Beefy Onion Soup Mix – pretty sure it will be good. I added a little extra liquid as it seemed pretty dry .. I hope that doesn’t turn out to be a mistake. Also added an extra sweet onion since my family loves them, would have thrown in mushrooms too (also because we love them) but I used them last night for stroganoff. Thanks for the recipe!! I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I’ve never used a flank steak before.
I hope it turns out great!
I make this but I use Golden Mushroom Soup – way better & the flavor is really intense – it’s a must try – you will never go back!
Thanks for the tip!
What is Golden Mushroom Soup Mix? I have never heard of it??
This has been my go to recipe for roast and round steak for years. My family loves it. Sometimes, I mix it up a little and make swiss steak by putting a couple cans of tomatoes and a package of onion soup mix. You can add a package of gravy mix to that to thicken it or make a corn starch slurry.
Yum! I’ll have to try that sometime!
I want to make the recipe Slow Cooker Steak with Gravy. I just need to know if it calls for 10 cans of mushroom soup or a 103/4 can of mushroom soup
It is a ten and three quarter ounce (10 3/4) can of mushroom soup. Enjoy!
I hope you are joking. Who ever heard of 10 cans of soup. hahahaha
I chuckled too…they couldnt be serious.
there are people who can not cook and making fun of them is mean
