How to Make Crock Pot Sausage, Green Beans and Potatoes

We have updated this post with with a cooking show video.

I remember the first time I ever had this recipe. It was actually the stovetop version. Michael and I had just started dating. Truth be told, I am pretty sure he was just trying to impress me. Well, it worked! I can’t even count the number of times we have had this over the almost four years of our marriage.

You all know how much I love my crock pot, so I couldn’t resist cRockin’ this recipe.

It is still as easy as the stovetop version from Michael’s bachelor days, but it was great for when I worked outside of our home.  Instead of making it when I got home from work and having to wait for it to get done, I could throw it together before I left for work (or better yet, have Michael throw it together!) and have it waiting for me when I arrived home after a long day of work!

  1. I grew up with this meal. Marines eat it, so Marine families eat it. We sometimes use ham instead of sausage especially after Easter using up leftover ham. I can’t use canned vegetables because I taste the aluminum, something to do with my epilepsy. So I use fresh or frozen and use chicken broth. I love to use red potatoes! I also use a no salt seasoning that has multiple spices. Always make cornbread with it, sometimes with salsa in it for a little kick! ๐Ÿ˜

This is sooooo good ๐Ÿ˜Š Only thing I did different was rinsed my can green beans in cold water and added 1 pack of Lipton onion soup for seasoning and 2 cups water since I drained green beans. I was at work looking for something easy saw this read the reviews went home at lunch threw it together come home 4 hours later my house smelled so good let cook a hour or 2 later was planning on making jiffy cornbread with it sample it it was so good I didnโ€™t make cornbread ๐Ÿคฃ Hubby loved it will definitely make again will add more veggies maybe carrots next time

I make this as often as my family will let me. I use frozen green beans from trader joes and add about 1 cup of unsalted chicken broth. Its all I can do not to eat this straight out of the crock pot! Its a keeper and in my recipe book.

    1. 5 stars
I hear ya! Once it starts filling up my house with all the yummy smells from the crock pot, I want to eat it straight out of the crock pot too! I’m so glad you and your family enjoy this recipe as much as we do.

    2. Is that wat you used for like the juice In it?

I made this tonight. But I made a few changes – I used fresh green beans that I had blanched first and then added 20oz of 2ater + 4 tablespoons of Better than Bouillon Vegetable Base, a tablespoon of bacon grease and 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. The canned beans have way to much salt for me so that I why I used fresh. However, I follow the recipe from there but used Kielbasa cause that was what I had on hand. Super good dinner. Thanks so much for posting.

Great job making it your own! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

    Could you use Andouille Sausage

    1. 5 stars
We haven’t tried this recipe with that kind of sausage, but it should work. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes!

Made many different versions of this recipe from this site in the last year.
Used Andouille Sausage once ,worked out great.
JMHO…spicier , or meat with a stronger flavor really kicks it up a notch.

So glad to hear it! In case you (or others) didn’t know, you can hover over the blue number of the serving size on our recipe cards and adjust it to the number of servings you need. It will change the amounts on the ingredients to match the number of servings needed. Hope this helps in the future!

I love this reciipe and have made it for quite awhile now. Used Turkey Kelbassa znow,
due to medical problems, can no long have any kind of sausage. What can I sub for
the Kelbassa? I can have and thought about chicken, but wonder if it will work. Do you have a suggestion? Thank you.

    1. 5 stars
We have made green beans and chicken together in a few different recipes, but not this one. I think it could work though. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes!

  8. Priscilla M Moncivaiz says:

Can I use frozen green beans and if so should I add a liquid?

    1. 5 stars
I haven’t tried using frozen green beans in this recipe. It might work. You will definitely need to add liquid since the liquid in this recipe comes from the cans of green beans. You could try a combination of water and broth to give it a full flavor. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

    2. I make this often for my family with beans from our garden that are frozen so I add 2 cups water and put sausage on top potatoes and beans on bottom. We do not add onion. We serve it as a meal and smash the potatoes on our plates and put butter on them. Has been my boys favorite meal since they were little now in their 20s.

We made this yesterday with red potatoes, smoked hatch green chili sausage, a red onion, and a couple bags of frozen green beans and it came out great! Nice easy meal to whip up before heading to work! thank you

Hub and I enjoyed this. I used frozen green beans so I added 1 cup of beef broth. I but the recipe in half so I used 3 potatoes and that was too many for us. Next time I think Iโ€™ll try red potatoes. I also added some Cajun seasoning instead of red pepper flakes. Good recipe!

    1. 5 stars
So glad you and your husband enjoyed this! If you give it a try with red potatoes, let me know what you think!

  11. Could you tell me how I would cook this on the stovetop? I ran out of tome to get it in the crockpot today. Thanks so much!

    1. 5 stars
You will want to bring your pot to a boil, reduce heat to a low boil, and let it cook until your potatoes are fork tender. Enjoy!

  12. 5 stars
I was surprised how delicious this turned out.My husband absolutely loved it.I would recommend a loaf of crusty italian bread for highly recommend!

Love this with the french cut green beans. OMG SO GOOD!!! You can cut up everything the night before (keep potatoes in water) and put together in the morning. It is super fast either way!

I’m so glad to hear it Maria! Thank you for taking your time to come and let us know you enjoyed this recipe!

  14. Stacie Branham says:

Really delicious! A added 3/4 c of chicken stock and 3 tbs of butter. After it was cooked I scooped out all the veggies and sausage and made a gravy with a little cornstarch right in the crockpot. It was delicious poured over the top. My family devoured it. Thank you!

    1. 5 stars
That sounds amazing Stacie! Thank you for sharing!

    2. Can you elaborate on how you made the gravy? Did you turn on high and cook more or just added the cornstarch to mix in and served?

  15. I would like to make this recipe for my husband and me by cutting it in half. In doing so, would I reduce cook time by half and don’t the canned green beans turn mushy?

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Sharon!

Do you have a 4 quart slow cooker? If so, I would recommend using it and the same timing. We have never had a problem with the green beans getting mushy. We usually use cut or Italian style, and they seem to hold up well. I hope this helps.

  16. Pamela Stewart says:

Could you use frozen green beans – added at the end? If using frozen, would you need to add some liquid?

  17. Kat Muster says:

This is MY kind of crock pot recipe! Throw it all in and just let it cook for as many hours as needed for the potatoes to cook through. SO good! Thank you for all the great crock pot recipes!

  18. I learned to make this back in the early 70’s from another Air Force wife. It was one of those inexpensive dinners we lived on to get from paycheck to paycheck.

  19. I make this all the time and didn’t even know there was a recipe for it. I am thinking about preparing all of my ingredients and freezing them in a gallon freezer bag for an easy Crock-Pot dump. Have you ever done this?

    1. 5 stars
I have not Samantha, but would love to know how it goes if you do!

  20. Do you use precooked sausage or uncooked sausage? I have an uncooked sausage.

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Carol!

I have always used precooked sausage. I haven’t tried it with uncooked sausage before. If you do, let me know how it goes and any adjustments you had to make!

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Marie!

Nope, just pour the whole can in! Enjoy!

  22. Can you use regular smoked sausage? Thanks

      Hi Lori!

Yes, I have made this with smoked sausage. I hope you enjoy this as much as we do!

I haven’t tried cooking this on high for 4 hours, but think it should work just fine! This is one of our family favorites. I hope it becomes one of yours!

This is an awesome simple meal and the family cannot get enough of it. I sometimes add cream of mushroom or chicken soup.
