How to Make Easy Round Steak in an Instant Pot
Aunt Lou here.
Whether you have bought meat in bulk and have a round steak or two in your freezer or bought one at the store because it is one of the cheaper cuts of meat, you want to use this recipe! We love beef around here and usually try to by a quarter beef so that we can keep our freezer stocked. However, the round steaks had always been a tough one for me because, well, the meat is pretty tough. So low and slow was the only way I knew to do it…like with this Easy Crock Pot Round Steak. However, that’s an all day recipe, and sometimes you don’t have all day. So I thought I would try out my crock pot recipe with my Instant Pot. I was a little skeptical that a round steak could become tender in just 20 minutes of cooking, but this Easy Instant Pot Round Steak made me a believer! Seriously, I barely used my knife. Most of the time I cut it with my fork!

I have the IP Ultra 3 & 8 qt and also the IP Duo 6 qt. The Ultra model seems to be temperamental and quick to give that burn notice. May be what some folks are experiencing. I much prefer the Duo model.

My first thing to cook in my Instant Pot, and I get a “burn” message. Panic!! I cut it off, scraped the bottom of the pot, and added a cup of beef broth — and it cooked perfectly. Great flavors and very tender meat.
Richard Burleson says
I made this tonight and the flavor was great. The problem I had was the steak was very tough. What could I have done wrong? I went back and checked and I feel like I followed the recipe.
I cooked some chicken breasts a few nights ago and had the same problem.
I love the instant pot, but I must be doing something wrong.
Aunt Lou says
Hi Richard!
Are you using your Instant Pot timer? It sounds like both recipes need to cook a little longer. When beef is tough, it needs to cook longer. I hope that helps!

Thank you guys so much! This was delish! I so rarely cook red meat and eat it even more rarely. This was to be a treat for my hubby. So easy and absolutely delicious that i even ate some!

I’m so glad to hear you and your husband enjoyed this! Thank you for taking the time to let me know! Comments like yours make my day!

I just purchased an electric pressure cooker after years of debate. This was my second meal to make for my family using my new purchase. This was DELICIOUS! I made my own egg noodles to serve with it and my family raved about how great everything was and there was not a single leftover. That is what I call a win! I am looking forward to trying more of your pressure cooker recipes.
lmp1520 says
This is one of the first things I made in my new Instant Pot & it was DELICIOUS! Even my husband, who’s pickier than our kids, loved it. We were both hesitant because it’s such a tough piece of meat but we were pleasantly surprised at how tender it turned out. Thanks for sharing! We’ll definitely be making it again.
Cali says
If my steaks are tenderized should I decrease the cooking time? Thanks!
Aunt Lou says
Hi Cali!
I haven’t tested this recipe with tenderized steaks, so I don’t want to tell you to decrease the time and you possibly have undercooked steaks. If you give it a try, let me know what you do and how it turned out!

I have some round steaks my sister bought in bulk and gave to us since she doesn’t like the marinade (it is montreal steak spice), and I am trying to figure out what to do with them all (there is 4 to cook, and I am only one person), so I thought of using our Mealthy Pot (similar to Instant Pot).
Do you think it would still go with the soup? And would the steaks being pre-marinated change the recipe? Thanks so much!
Aunt Lou says
Hi Sara!
The marinade would definitely change the flavor of this recipe. About how much do the four steaks weigh? That could change the cooking time a bit.
Aunt Lou
Sara says
Thank you Lou, the steaks were just under the amount in your recipe, combined about 1.5lb. I am happy to report I decided to give it a try anyway (I just used the recipe as is, except I didn’t put onion soup mix, since there was already spices in the meat), and luckily it turned out amazingly, better than I’d even hoped. My husband (who recently became vegetarian) was very jealous! The flavours went together very well, and the meat was done, very tender, not overcooked. Thanks for the recipe, I’m sure I will be able to use it again in future with marinated or non-marinated steaks. All the best greetings from Canada, Sara
Aunt Lou says
That’s wonderful Sara! I’m so glad it turned out so well for you and love that you adapted it for what you had on hand. Thank you for coming back and telling me the good news of it turning out so well!

If your round steak is not thin like in the video, should you beat it?
Aunt Lou says
Hi Gayle!
If you would like to beat it, you can or you can cut it into serving size pieces. Enjoy!

So so easy, quick, and yummy! I’m a tough critic so trust me on this one! (BTW we cooked the noodles on the side and thickened the sauce to make a great gravy.)
Aunt Lou says
I’m so glad to hear you liked it Maxine! Love the idea of thickening the sauce too! Sounds yummy!

Beth says
Can you cook potatoes with the meat at the same time?
Aunt Lou says
Hi Beth!
The potatoes only take anywhere from 6-10 minutes in an electric pressure cooker, where this meat take 20. I’m afraid that the potatoes would turn to mush if you put them in with the meat for the entire time.

I bought a side of beef from farmer last year. Had no clue what to do with the round steak. Sounded scary – like cooking leather! Just made your recipe (used golden mushroom soup instead cause that’s all I had at home). I was scared the onion soup pack would make it too salty but I was totally wrong. OMG it’s FANTASTIC!! Thanks so much for sharing.
Aunt Lou says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it Cheyann! Thank you for taking the time to leave such kind words!

The recipe was fantastic. But I also go the burn error the first time. There seemed to be plenty of liquid so I stirred it and added another half cup just to be sure. The gravy ended up really runny but was still good.

I’m so glad you enjoy this recipe Tyler! That burn error can be such a pain! I’m glad you found a way around it!

Lysa says
Can you put the meat in frozen?
Aunt Lou says
Hi Lysa!
I haven’t tried this recipe with frozen meat. It would change the cooking time, so you will want to watch it closely the first time you make it with frozen meat. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

Kait says
20 minutes must be too long, I used a cup and a half of broth because canned soup is disgusting. It made hockey pucks.
Aunt Lou says
Hi Kait!
We hate to hear your dish didn’t turn out for you. If you omitted the cream soup, that would definitely impact the flavor and texture since it is a key ingredient in the recipe.
We totally understand that not everyone enjoys cream soups. Unfortunately not every recipe on the site is everyone’s cup of tea. Hope you can find something else on the site to enjoy.

My instant pot also said “BURN”. When I took lid off it had plenty of liquid. I just stirred it and it was fine. I don’t know why I get the burn error when it has plenty of liquid.
Aunt Lou says
Hi Judy!
It sounds like it could possibly be that your seal wasn’t sealing correctly. Make sure to check your lid’s seal before you lock your lid into place each time to make sure it is on correctly and nothing is stuck to it.
~Aunt Lou
Susanne says
I couldn’t figure out how to make this without getting the “burn” message on my instant pot.
Aunt Lou says
Hi Susanne!
I’m so sorry you kept giving the burn message! It sounds like you might be at a different altitude then us. In Cris’ travels, she found that altitude could affect how much liquid it took to get her Instant Pot to pressure, as well as the time it took to get it to pressure. You might try this with a cup of water instead of a half a cup. I hope that helps!
~Aunt Lou
Phyllis says
I am surprised that only 1/2 cup of water is needed with the thick soup.
I guess your PC didn’t have trouble coming to pressure? Wow, my Instant Pot doesn’t like to come up to pressure without more liquid. I will try it as is. It looks really good.
Aunt Lou says
Hi Phyllis!
My pressure cooker didn’t have a problem. The water, soup and juices from the meat created a delicious, thin gravy. However, you know your pressure cooker best, so do what you think is best. Enjoy!
