How to Make French Toast in a Crock Pot

Youtube video

Aunt Lou here.

Oh. My. Yum.

Have you seen my post over on Goodeness Gracious about Mommaโ€™s French Toast? If not, you will want to check that out too! And you will see that I LOVE French Toast. It has such a strong connection to wonderful memories from my childhood, and well it is just amazingly yummy!

When I saw this recipe in Gooseberry Patchโ€™s Slow-Cooker Fall Favorites , I knew I had to make it. I also knew I was going to make a few tweaks so that it would taste have the same great flavor of Mommaโ€™s French Toast. You see, one of Mommaโ€™s secrets is that she never skimps on her vanilla and cinnamon, so I knew I had to add in some vanilla on this Slow Cooker French Toast Casserole.

I also tried something different for the crumble that you put on top. You see, I REALLY stink at making a crumble. I can never get my butter to just the right softness. It is either too hard and wonโ€™t mix at all or too soft and just becomes a melted mess. So I tried cutting together with a couple of knives my softened butter (which was too soft at the time!) with the brown sugar and vanilla. It was kind of a globby mess, but I put it in the fridge while the bread mixture was chillinโ€™ out in there. When it was time to sprinkle the crumble on top, I broke up my globby mess over the top of the casserole and it became the best crumble this girl has ever made! Who knew?! You know what they say, necessity is the mother of invention!

This was fantastic! I served it with a drizzle of blueberry syrup!

  2. Kristin Wrobel says:

Does the bread need to be soaked, if Iโ€™m using fresh brioche?

    1. 5 stars
I haven’t tried this recipe with fresh brioche, but think it will probably work. The bread will still need to set so it can soak up the egg mixture. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

  3. Your video ON THE SLOW COOKER FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE WAS EXCELLENT. – TWO THUMBS UP. Can’t wait to make it and then the extra step of putting it in the broiler for a couple more minutes. I certainly will keep your website saved and utilized in the future

  4. Hi there! I really want to make this for breakfast, but I picked up my French bread loaf and it has turned hard! Will soaking the bread in the egg mixture overnight soften it up enough? And will it stay soft? I’m assuming it will, but wanted a second opinion!

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Jessica!

Yes, I would recommend the overnight soak for bread that is harder. Once it soaks up all of the wet ingredients, I think it will be fine…I haven’t tried this recipe with bread that has turned hard, but think it will work. If you give it a try, let me know how it turns out!

My bread got missy in the toss, is this OK? It also was very wet, why soak for 4 hours? Thank you

      Hi Tiffany!

It is okay. It will still be yummy. You let it soak for 4 hours so the bread and soak up all the wet ingredients. I hope you enjoy this as much as we do!

Next time you beat eggs and milk together, whisk up the eggs first and then add milk and mix together. If all else fails, use a larger bowl. I learned from experience!!!HAHAHA! Looks great and tastes great!!!

  8. this may be a dumb question, when you say French bread are we talking a baguette? of it if’s a baguette should I use two? Also any thoughts on maybe adding a breakfast meat like sausages or bacon? thank you for the help/advice going to make this for xmas morning.

      Hi Sean!

You can use either a large loaf of French bread and or two small baguettes. I haven’t tried this recipe with adding a breakfast meat. If I did, I would try bacon. The salty/savory might mix well with the sweet. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

I made this for a meeting at work and everyone thought it was amazing! Every morsel was gone. I did cook it in the oven as I had to get it done quickly and it was still delicious. Thanks for a great new recipe!

I’m so glad you and your coworkers enjoyed it! I hope you find more recipes that you enjoy just as much as this one!

  10. Could I double this recipe? Or should I just make more than one?

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Yolanda!

I would make more than one. I’m not sure if the center would get done before the edges burned if your doubled it.

This was very good, I was worried it would be too sweet with all that brown sugar on top but it really was good and needed no syrup. I want to add that instead of a bowl to soak the bread in overnight I used a gallon ziploc bag and it fit everything nicely. You may even be able to use the crockpot liners to tie up and soak overnight then you really cut down the clean up. I also tear my bread- very fast and the kids can help.

  12. Can you tell me how big of a crockpot you used?

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Bridget!

I used a 6-quart crock pot for this recipe. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

  13. This is how I make old fashioned bread pudding for dessert. serving it with maple syrup.

    1. 5 stars
Bread pudding- yum! I haven’t had it in years. Sounds wonderful.

  14. Melissa Goad says:

Please.explain why you didn’t use the saute function of the crockpot to brown the bottom for your texture instead of heating up the house with the broiler.

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Melissa!

The crock pot I used when I made this recipe for this post does not have the browning feature, and some people don’t have a browning feature on any of their crock pots. However, if you would like to try the browning feature instead of using the broiler, I would love to know how it goes! Enjoy!

  15. Do know if you can substitute coconut palm sugar for the brown sugar?

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Katie!

I haven’t tried this with anything but brown sugar. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes! Enjoy!

    2. Did you try it with coconut sugar? I was thinking of using that as well!

  16. Mindy Banks says:

Can this cook longer than 4 hours on low ? One place said 4 hours or overnight but the recipe didn’t say the same so I want to be sure.

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Mindy!

The 4 hours to overnight timing in the recipe is for putting the mixture in your fridge. You will want to cook it on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours. Enjoy!

This sounds so yummy! I looked at other recipes online but this is the one that seemed easiest and yummiest! I’m about to go into the kitchen now and make out for our princess for her birthday breakfast. I anticipate out being a hot and it youngest princess already told me she wants it for her birthday breakfast later this year as well! I am sure she will still feel this way after trying it tomorrow morning.

Maybe I missed this answer somewhere but if so I apologize…how many people will this feed? I would like to make it Christmas morning for 9 adults and 3 kids. Will I need 2 batches?

    1. 5 stars
      Hi Nikki!

This recipe serves 8. You can find the servings at the top of the recipe card. If you make two batches, you will have leftovers, but the leftovers are yummy too! Enjoy!

    2. If you double this recipe do you need to double the cooking time?

    3. 5 stars
      Hi Kellie!

I have not tried doubling this recipe. If you do, you will need a very large slow cooker. I would guess that it would need a longer cooking time, but probably not double. The first time you try this, you will want to make sure it is a time when you can watch it closely to make sure it doesn’t turn off to soon or that it doesn’t burn. Let me know how it goes! Enjoy!

HI there! I just found this recipe via Pinterest. Looks yummy! I have a tip for making a crumble. Any time I have to “cut” butter into a recipe, I grate a frozen stick of butter with a cheese grater. Works like a charm : )

    1. That’s a great idea! Thanks for the tip!

  20. Love french toast. This looks so good. Can’t wait to try.

  21. I’ve never ever ever ever ever heard of French Toast Casserole.

    I’ve GOT to tweet this.

    Thanks.

    1. I hadn’t either, but I LOVE this recipe!
