Meal Planning on a Budget
Aunt Lou here.
I have shared many ways that I save money while feeding my family. (You can find all the Budget Meal Plans here.) For Budget Meal Plan: Week 21, we are using one of the main ways that I save money. We are going to use ingredients that can be found at what one might call a “budget grocery store” or a “discount grocery store” and by buying generic brands.
In my small town, the only grocery store we have is a budget/discount grocery store. Since going to a grocery store with a full range of name brand products is a bit more of a drive, I usually try to come up with recipes that use ingredients I can find at my local discount store. I love that the generic products I buy at this store are usually cheaper than the same generic products at the name brand store, even when those products are on sale. Also, by going to a store with a more limited selection, I find that I buy less things that are not on my list, which also saves me money.
If you do not have a discount or budget grocery store near you, you can still save money by buying the generic version of the ingredients you need. For some products, there is a big difference in the prices of name brand and generic. For other products, the difference is small. However, when you add all of those savings up, it really does make a difference.
